Will a cup of tea with milk have much of an effect on intermittent fasting?
It depends on what you're fasting for. If it's autophagy, then milk breaks fast. If it's for weight loss, you're okay as long as its only a splash of milk and only 1-2 a day. A fast means no calories, no carbs. Even if it's a tablespoon of whole milk - 1.4 nets carbs plus 18 calories in 2 tablespoons of whole milk which is a small splash. As you can see, it is not fasting. Tea that has zero calories and zero carbs is okay. Seltzer water is okay if it again, has no carbs, no calories (link). If it has caffeine, drink no more than 2 cups a day because more than that can spike insulin. Some people may tell you this and that (with calories) is okay during a fast, but if you really want your fast to be therapeutic, don't want do it. Autophagy is what you want to get rid of old cells e.t.c. Milk may break your fast sadly; as you aren't fasting when you add a splash of milk, as it releases insulin. If you're new to Keto through don't worry, it'll get easier to pass it up.Milk or heavy cream? Regular milk has a bunch of sugar in it, while the heavy cream is high in fat. Fortunately, fat has less effect on insulin thereby less effect on your fasting. However, if you don't like heavy cream in tea so much, you actually can dilute the heavy cream with water and it's just like milk only without the sugar content. I understand but just an FYI, those little things add up quickly. Try heavy whipping cream instead of whole milk. I do that in my coffee and also in my tea.
My morning cuppa with toast was a hard thing to give up. It was my favourite breakfast. I could go without any kind of food. So, don't stress, you are doing great. Keep it up. As long as the amount of milk you used is less than 50 calories, you are technically okay. If it was no more than 2 tablespoons, it's no problem. I recommend to people no more than 2 tablespoons of HWC, MCT Oil, Coconut Oil, Whole Milk or butter a day while fasting with great results. If fasting, try a tablespoon of unsweetened almond milk instead in your tea.
There are a few benefits you can get from fasting. Body composition, anti-aging, disease fighting and cognitive benefits. Having food like milk in the middle if a fast can briefly stop fat loss (the fast ended when you drank milk and begun again as soon as it was metabolized), but will delay anti-aging benefits longer. A splash of milk isn't the worst thing you could have. It can be confusing to your body to have food in the middle of a longer fast. So, just try keep it clean and stick with water, tea or coffee - no milk. You'll get the most out if it that way.
