I would say CALORIES. Calories matter must but they both work. Counting carbs is just another form of counting calories. It can depend on the way you are taught, learn and are most comfortable with counting. I would advise you stay consistent in a calories range for a full week and see progress. Learning macros is helpful so you have more balance in your diet and it can help you feel satisfied and more energized while in a deficit.You should focus on calories first and then macro-nutrient like carbs after you get the hang of it. Counting also protein and fat can help in a long way. Calories for weight-loss, protein for muscle preservation/building.
Keep it simple. Count calories if you are active. Carbs if you're not active.
