Will being prescribed an SSRI (antidepressants) for sleep issues
cause weight loss weight gain?

What sleep issue, if you don't mind me asking? Not having enough sleep will surely affect your gains. Eight hours of sleep is recommended for healing anyways. Some SSRI's have potential side effects for metabolism. If you sleep so bad, SSRI's could help. Probably have a positive one if it improves your sleep.

What's an SSRI?

SSRI stands for "Selective Serotonin Inhibitor". It increases serotonin levels in the brain, commonly used aw an antidepressant or for sleep aid. However SSRI can cause serotonin and it can be fatal.

To sum it up. They could, but don't have to. They won't screw with your ability to put on muscle, however should you happen to get unwanted/adverse side effects, they could prevent you from performing to you full potential in the gym, or have effects on your appetite.

If they happens to successfully improve your sleep they would likely be beneficial. Most people have been on SSRI's for years and haven't had any addition regards to gains. It only helps in sleep. It really depends on how you as an individual respond to the specific medicine you have been prescribed. Talk to your PCP. They are all by prescription only. They could have other recommendations like "melatonin or trazodone". Can't really determine how you react to it until you have tried it. So, if your doctor thinks it's the correct medication for you, take it, see how you feel on it and discuss any problems with your doctor.

However, you need to resist the pharmaceutical industrial complex as much as possible. Just a side note - do not mix SSRI'S and common sleep supplements, especially ones containing "tryptophan" or other things which influence serotonin levels as that may be very dangerous. As most people have always recommend 5 htp, don't mix SSRI with 5 htp. It could be dangerous. Try only 5 htp as a standalone instead.

When it comes to gains, don't expect to see much of a difference but some will make it harder to lose weight. While some might help you gain steadily while losing fat, others may cause decrease in testosterone. That would explain why most people testosterone levels were extreme low before starting TRT. You would have to talk to your doctor if a drop could have mess with your gains.

In conclusion, I would try something natural first, but talk to your doctor or pharmacist first, because even natural cab be harmful if you have any other medical issues. If you can't melatonin, try "Valerian Root". It work pretty well for sleep issues. It takes just a couple weeks to kick in.
