The desire to be fit, healthy, and live a long life is perhaps the most common of all of human desires and the basic need of all. George Gilder puts this way, "longevity is now the most precious of all commodities in our society".
But where did we ever get the idea that healthy lifestyle, and overall well-being was an easy pass, and guaranteed at little or no cost. The something for nothing virus runs rampant in all areas of healthcare today. People do things to their bodies that are virtually guaranteed to undermine their health and shorten their live. They then demand the medical and pharmaceutical industry somehow take responsibility to return them to health and wholeness, at little or no cost to themselves..
Everyone today knows the five-word formula for health and fitness: "Eat less and exercise more". It has never been otherwise. These five words summarize the best findings of hundreds of books and thousands of articles. The key is to practice them daily.
The epidemic of obesity, with 60 percent of Americans either overweight or seriously obese, is a direct result of thinking that you can have "health for nothing".
Obesity numbers grow as more people become addicted to "something for nothing" in other areas of their lives. They soon begin to see themselves as victims. The resent others who are fit and trim. They lash out and blame either their "hormones" or the companies that sell them the food that they eat too much of or product that they had overused.
