Know How Your Supplements Affect You

Supplements can be your best friend or worst foe. They have usually been associated with cure or symptoms relief and taken with little thought as about adverse effects. But the truth is that as more and more exotic drugs are discovered every year and made available in prescription form or over-the-counter, some are having unwelcome and even dangerous side effects. Add to that the growing search for herbals to enhance our quest for good health and we have a potential lurking menace. Most of us can avoid a dangerous outcome just by discussing all the medicines, supplements and herbals we are consuming with our healthcare provider who can then, with his/her expertise and advanced knowledge, help us guard against bad outcomes.

Pharmacists are also taking up the challenge by putting time and energy into providing educational materials designed to alert us to potential problems with any new medications. However, as pharmacists search for ways to avoid the traps of weight loss and bodybuilding guru's, they are becoming concerned about the fact that  50 percent of the adult population use supplements everyday that could have negative effects on their health.

Most people are so determined to do all they could to lose weight or build muscle. They have heard so many testimonials from the internet about various herbal medicines that they decided to try one. Unfortunately, some never checked with a doctor, and start experiencing negative side effects.

A very well-designed study in the United State found that some medications routinely used to treat medical conditions associated with low testosterone levels, appears to affect the body in negative ways. The drugs studied included very popular over-the-counter medications like steroids, sleep aids, boosters, sexual performances and many others. Self-prescribed medication can have several bodily changes that can make some drugs like these even more risky. Steroids most times causes muscle mass to be replaced by body fat, and people over sixty-five are often the one's at the receiving end. These steroids causes negative outcomes which include falls, depression, or in some cases even death. Also, increases adverse drug reactions in elderly populations.

I am often concerned about elderly patients who are taking prescription medications for low testosterone levels long-term because the medication can sometimes buildup in the body, making it necessary to adjust the dose downward to continue a safe range. Some common side effects are unconsciousness, short breathing, organ failure, dizziness, hair loss and changes in bladder control. Many herbals are a great benefits, but you must be certain they are not reacting with another medicine or herbal you maybe taking.

Recent clinical studies reported that "more die from drugs than traffic accidents". Drugs overdose now outpace traffic accidents as the leading causing of injury-related death in most countries, as use of illegal prescription drugs continues to rise. Treat medications with great respect and don't ever fall into the trap of manipulating your medications and dosages.
