How Does Physical Exercise Improve Memory, Concentration And Brain Health?

A panel made up of three institutes of the National Institute of Health found a "strong link between physical activity and brain health....Older people who exercise are less likely to experience cognitive decline".

This cause for celebration!!! Research shows that we are not total victims of our genes and that lifestyle, especially physical exercise, will help equip your brain and improve heart rate for the journey of life. We have heard again and again that exercise will control cardiovascular risk factors and give new life to almost every organ system in our body.

The connection between cardiovascular exercise, the heart and the brain factions have been studied by many teams, who have concluded that moderate exercise triggers a release of neurotropins in the hippocampus or memory area of the brain. Neurotropins are hard workers that promote growth and repair of neural tissue.

You maybe thinking, "I am over fifty and have not exercised a day in my life. Is it too late to start"? Doctors assure us that it is never too late to begin to take advantage of all the benefits exercise has to offer. Not only will you delay mental decline, you will also likely notice an improvement in mood and more control over your response to stress.

A visit to your doctor is a good first step and he/she will guide you on your way to a good exercise regime. You maybe relieved to know that research has proven, when it comes to exercise and the heart, that harder is not necessarily better. Moderate exercise is needed; as over-exercising is not good for the brain. New stem cells are produced after nine days of exercising with a third of them remaining to become functioning nerve cells; over-exercising can result to stress. The theory is that if too much of the body's own morphine (endorphin) and stress hormones are produced, it actually retards the brain's ability to make new brain cells. Doctors will usually recommend thirty-to-forty-five minute sessions of moderate exercise four or five days a week for most people at sixty percent of your maximum pulse rate, unless of course you happen to be an elite athlete, in which case the target pulse rate will be higher.
