Why do some people keep adding more weight while others don't? Does it have to do with our genes, hormones, habits, diet. Or better still, is nature playing tricks on us?
All these questions you might have asked yourself or maybe worse. There have never been a time before in "human history" where more people are more concerned about their physical appearance and personal health than in this present 21th century. However, there are no other better way to live an overload happy life than in the practice of a good health habits. A good health practices is one of the ingredients to maintain an overall state of well-being both emotional, physical and psychological. Unfortunately, 50% of people today are living below the normal health standards. They ain't really concerned about what they take into their body. A heathy food must contain the right nutrients needed to keep the body alive and help it grow. All foods you eat should contain the six groups of food substances or nutrients at a correct proportion. They are :-
*Carbohydrates
*Proteins
*Fats and Oils ( or lipids),
*Water
*Mineral Salts, and
Vitamins
The biggest health issue with us today is that we overeat and become overweight. Recent studies have shown that nearly 60% of the world population are officially overweight, and more than 30% are obese, which is defined as being very fat in a way that is not healthy. Obesity can increase the risk of heart disease if proper care is not taken. It is more necessary to keep your weight under control and keeping it under control by choosing the right lifestyle and eating healthy.
Keeping your weight under control does not really require you going on starvation diet, cuz going on a diet wouldn't work for everybody. Most of us, we eat less food or only food of a particular type in order to lose weight. However, lack of sufficient food on a daily basis may result to starvation (not to get enough food for a long period of time). Studies have shown that most people tend to put the weight back on almost as quickly as they lose it, and their are many reasons for this.
Each one of us has a certain metabolic rate, a rate by which the body burn food into energy and materials for growth by chemical processes. To explain further, the body uses food to process energy which is essential for life. The energy rich nutrients in food are mentioned above :- Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats and oils, Water, Minerals and Vitamins. Their energy content are as follows :
Carbohydrates 1g contains 16.7 kg
Fats 1g contains 37.6kg
Proteins 1g contains 16.7kg
So, during metabolism oxygen is then use to breakdown food substances in simple molecules. The following reaction occurs:
Food + Oxygen ----------- Carbondioxide + Water + Energy
The reaction is rapid and heat is given off in large amounts. However, scientists have help us to understand that the main food that is burnt in cells is glucose; that energy is not released in one big step, but released bit by bit. This metabolic rate is set over over the course of a person lifetime by the amount of food they eat relative to the amount of exercise or activities they do to work it off. This is why the body returns to former weight or stay the same no matter how much you take off as a the result of crash dieting.

It's pretty much taking in more energy than you're expending (which is then converted to fat). It's important for everyone to remember a lb of fat and a lb of muscle will weigh the same, but take up different amounts of space. It's why those who are obese look fluffy :P
ReplyDeleteDo you think a lack of understanding in nutrition (how much one needs + how nutrition works) alongside a lack of exercise contributes greatly to this problem? Do you have any easily digestible resources for those who want to learn more?
