Hormones secretions are diffused directly into the bloodstream and are transported to wherever they are needed. They circulate in your bloodstream and exert their effects on certain organs known as target organs. These effects maybe to:
* Speed up (excite),
* Slow down (inhibit), or
* alter.
Some hormones control growth and development and may exert its effects on more than one organ at the same time.
Normally, yourbody responses to hormones are fairly slow, from a few hours to some days. Some body responses, like those that occur during growth, sexual maturity and pregnancy, take months and years. An exception, however, is adrenaline which brings rapid body responses.
Your body only needs small amounts of hormones to bring about their effects. These amounts in your blood are regulated by feedback mechanism. All hormones are inactivated in the liver and excreted in urine, some within minutes, others within days. Serious illnesses can arise if an organ in your body malfunctions by producing too much or too little of its hormones.
Testosterone And Oestrogen Hormones
Certain cells produce different hormones:
* the testis produces testosterone, the male sex hormones, and
* the ovaries produces oestrogen and progesterone, the female sex hormones.
These sex hormones are steroids and their production begins at puberty and continues through adult life. Puberty is a period in late childhood (between 10 to 14 years of age) when the production of sex hormones is greatly increased, causing your body to grow rapidly and change into sexually mature form.
Testosterone is responsible for the the development of secondary male sex characteristics such as growth of hair in the pubic region - armpit, chest, and eventually the face, and the deepening of the voice.
While Oestrogen is known to bring about the development of secondary female sexual characteristics such as enlargement of the breasts, growth of the hair in pubic region and armpit, widening if the hips, and fat distribution that is typical in a female body.
As men age, the body stops producing natural testosterone, thus, leading to negative symptoms like hair loss, erectile dysfunction, weakening of the muscles and so on. While in most women, the ovaries cease to release eggs or produce sex hormones between the age of 45 and 55. The "change" in a woman life is known as Menopause. When this happens, they will not be able to reproduce any more.
Testosterone treatments are now made available and they comes in many forms like injections, oral, gel, and therapy. However, the most popular is the natural supplement, also known as boosters. Supplements are more preferable to injections, because most of these injections contains illegal steroids, which are poor choice for treating low testosterone.
Recently, testosterone supplements are generally claimed to help build more lean muscle, lose body fats, increase sex drive, improve mood and confidence. However, some testosterone supplements can actually cause hormonal imbalance. Women should avoid testosterone supplements with the aim of building muscles, as such remedies may pose a risk to health.
For women, birth control or contraceptive pills are synthetic compounds like progesterone which inhibit ovulation.
